9/8/2009 : Local Democrats Oppose Somersworth School’s Decision to Censor the President
Local Democrats called on Somersworth school administrators to let local school children hear Pres. Obama’s stay-in-school message to students Sept. 8. School Superintendent Karen Soule decided not allow students to watch the president’s live address. Strafford County Democratic Chair Caitlin Daniuk launched a petition drive to reverse the decision, saying, "Once again, the radical right wing of the Republican Party has proven they will do anything to tear down our President. They have now even gone so far as to use our children and schools to score cheap political points.

"President Obama’s address next week is about service and staying in school, and not specific policy positions. For decades, presidents have spoken directly to our students about the importance of education. Now, it appears that Ms. Karen Soule has given in to political pressure from the Republican Party. Unfortunately, that will only rob the students of Rollinsford and Somersworth of the chance to be inspired by our nation’s Commander-in-Chief."

"I call on Ms. Soule to reverse her decision and stop playing politics. A failure to do so is just plain wrong."

Rep. Ken Ward of Somersworth wrote Supt. Soule, calling on her to allow students to watch the president.

"I am shocked and very disappointed at your very poor partisan decision to prohibit the address from the President of the United States to our school children. It is indicative of the frightening lack of respect and manners that seems to be so common today. As our superintendent I would like to have believed that you might not have had such deficiencies and that you would have eagerly embraced any encouragement of our children’s efforts at education. Certainly the very poor ratings of Somersworth High School would seem to show that such presidential encouragement is needed. Isn’t the rating of the high school second to last in the whole state?"
